Help with the basics?

I've created a LJ community for Kirk/Spock fandom (named, naturally, "kirkspock"), but I need help with the basics.

I don't have the first idea on how to make a community look "pretty" - i.e., adding pictures, background colors, frames, buttons, etc. I've managed to get myself lost in a FAQ maze.

If anyone can point me to an LJ FAQ on designing communities, I'd be very grateful. I'm good at following directions, once I actually find "Step One". So if anyone knows where "Step One" is, can you let me know?

basics

Okay, go up to "Journal", select "Edit Journal Style", then when you're in that menu, select (via the little window on the right hand side of the screen) which "user" you want to work as (you'll pull that down and your group kirkspock will be one of the choices). When you go there, you can make basic changes like journal style with pre-chosen color choices or you can choose your own. You can also have a default user pic for the group. For really complex layers and styles, et al, you have to be a paid member, but that's only a few bucks a year. LMK if I can help with anything.

My instant reaction is that it's not worth the effort. I view everything through my own style as I DON'T like background colours, etc.

Keep it simple and let the content speak for itself.
Not everyone can create their own stylesheets, particularly new users, and the web visitor is often heavily influenced initially by format over content. First impressions and etc.

The "basic" style is also, imho, ugly as the day is long. lol
