Music Vids & Miami Vice

Songvids. Some vidders are just so damn good, that their images become, in my mind, permanently associated with a particular song.

Just the other day I was listening to the radio. “One Night in Bangkok” came on, and suddenly my head was filled with images from “Miami Vice” – specifically, images dealing with Lt. Martin Castillo (Edward James Olmos) and the Southeast Asia drug storylines.

I have *no* idea who did this vid. All I know was, I saw this vid, probably in the late 80s, and would *love* to see it again. If anyone reading this knows which vid I’m talking about, could they let me know the name of the vidder?

Now, aren’t these the perfect “Vice” lyrics?

One night in Bangkok makes a hard man humble
Not much between despair and ecstasy
One night in Bangkok and the tough guys tumble
Can't be too careful with your company
I can feel the devil walking next to me

I’ve been thinking a lot about MV lately – it was the first fandom to lure me away from my Trek monogamy. (Re the new movie, I think I’ll Netflix it.)

Speaking of Vice, I found this link about MV and the ‘subversion of traditional patriarchal ideas’ over on metafandom:

Fascinating comments, particularly those about my favorite character, Lt. Martin Castillo, and how his “consistently submissive body language and a decidedly Eastern moral code” still manages to make him read as “the most dangerous person in the room.”

The most dangerous person in the room. So Very True.

And! The way Martin Castillo and Sonny Crockett could stand in a crowded room and have everyone else disappear but themselves.... Those astonishingly intense stares! The wonderful contrast between the two of them!

They did one dream sequence on one of the Vice episodes - it had Sonny walking on a beach. He was all in casual white, and the beach was white, and they desaturated the color out of the sequence so he was as incandescent as an angel. Castillo came walking up to him, in his black business suit, utterly startling against all that white. The contrast between them and the intensity between them was just perfectly encapsulated in this scene.

Sigh. I'm remembering why I loved this pairing so much.

I'm a Crockett/Tubbs gal *g* but I like Castillo in general.
Quite a handsome man! I saw the series pilot movie the other night. It was great to see it after so many years! I'm not into this new MV movie they are making. I don't like who they cast as Tubbs at all. He does not have near the good looks Phillip Micheal Thomas had. The actor playing Sonny looks more like Don Johnson at least. But I'm not one for re-makes. They never stand up to the original.
Philip Michael Thomas sure was gorgeous, wasn't he! I remember when the show was first announced, and there were those ads, and TV Guide print ads, and I remember thinking how very beautiful he was.

But when Castillo was introduced - Thud! I had it bad. I very rarely do fangirl stuff like writing fan letters to actors, but I wrote one to Edward James Olmos. (And he wrote me back!)

I almost always go for the more rugged types, though. Example: given a choice between Harrison Ford and Tommy Lee Jones in "The Fugitive", I go right for Jones! So I guess Edward James Olmos was a natural for me.

I saw a preview for the new movie, and I'm definitely Netflixing this. The reviews don't sound appealing, and, like you said, remakes rarely are as good as the original.

I really wish the DVDs had the original series music. I'd buy them in a heartbeat if they did, but they went for the cheap, so I went for the "forget it". Alas, my VHS tapes from the 80s haven't stood the test of time; most of them have faded away.

I tried to do a search for the vid, but to no avail. Like you I think this song is perfect for Castillo.

I must admit I am a Crockett/Tubbs girl, myself. I have a new zine I picked up at SL. ;-)

However, I LOVED Castillo - and I stress love. I did have a bit of a crush on the character. I've always been attracted to the quiet, moody types. Usually, there is something very powerful...be it hurt or whatever deep beneath the surface...and don't you want to be the one to comfort? LOL
A big yeah to this *ggg*. I want to be with Castillo! lol Which is why I don't see him in a slash way. He's... what's the word...craggy? Like Charles Bronson. Rugged, Rough. Deep. Oh, yeah, I do fan girl quite well.

Yes! All of the above.

I do definitely go for those craggy types. When I was fannish about "The Fugitive" (movie) I went for Tommy Lee Jones over Harrison Ford. But - I do like slashing them with the prettier guys...! ;-)
Is MV slash fandom still active at all? I'd love to read some fic but would have no clue where to look for anything good. I never read anything. The opportunity just never came up, until now! lol
I haven't seen anything new in MV fandom in ages, but Sky said she bought a brand new Crockett/Tubbs zine at SL, and I'm going to ask her about that.

Here's a recs page. I don't know if any of the links are still valid, but have fun exploring!

For Crockett/Tubbs, you should definitely check out Flamingo's "Wicked Games".

Also, agentwithstyle dot com has a bunch of Vice zines available.

You're a MV fan too?

Hey! It's me again, and I just LOVED MV. Well, for a while, I was obsessed with Sonny Crockett (DJ). Have no desire whatsoever to see that travesty of a new movie (why bother calling it MV at all??) Castillo was quite amazing too. Talk about strong, silent types!
One Night In Bangkok... I know I've seen this one... hang on... *rummages on VHS vidshelf*

Yes. I have it on a compilation tape from Kandy Fong titled "Early Videos, In The Beginning (Favorites to 1994). It appears that the real name of the vidder is listed on the photocopied insert that Kandy made, and there are six other vids by the same vidder on the tape. I'll email you.
Cool, thanks! I'd given up hope finding out who made this vid.
